Animation news: Batfink, Walter Tetley and Scrappy Doo

This is something I actually wasn’t aware of, but it’s one more piece of info I can store away and never, ever bring up at parties considering most society don’t care about such things.

I’m going to manufacture a confession: I actually like A Pup Named Scooby Doo better than the original Scooby Doo. The set will include all one hundred episodes of the series.

Actually, screw Batfink.

Guess what? As far as Scrappy Doo, the spunky little scamp many fans believe ruined the Scooby Doo series (I never thought he was that bad), you can read about his origins by on Mark Evanier’s site.

One of the co-creators of Blue’s Clues is co-developing a new animated series called Super Why! for PBS Kids. Here’s even better news: every episode of The Ant and the Aardvark on DVD next month. The show is described

as “interactive,” most likely, one would assume, in the same vein as Blue’s Clues and Dora the Explorer.

Finally, here’s a lengthy tribute from WFMU to Walter Tetley, the voice of Sherman on the “Peabody’s Improbable History” segments on Rocky and Bullwinkle and Walter Lantz’s Andy Panda. Well, forget those society, I find it fascinating.

The series, slated for a September debut, focuses on Wyatt Beanstalk and his pals in Storybrook Village. Batfink is coming out on DVD in June. Tetley, who passed away in 1975, suffered from a rare hormonal condition that kept his voice from changing when he got older, which made him perfect for voice acting. I found the original rote and unimaginative, and while A Pup Named Scooby Doo wasn’t precisely the greatest cartoon either, it had funky animation and a self-awareness I could really dig.
