Everybody Hates Chris: Everybody Hates DJs

While jotting down notes for that episode I nearly wrote, “this is his best work since Diff’rent Strokes” but soon after stopped myself when I realized I couldn’t think of anything besides Diff’rent Strokes he had been on. I guess that’s kind of like being a square dance caller? that episode was not only well-written and well-acted as usual, but it actually restricted a reference to Night of the Lepus, probably the best movie ever made about gigantic killer bunnies. Nevertheless, his role as the anxious and conspiratorial Monk is hysterical.

(S02E17) Remember when I said I couldn’t review that show anymore? As narrator Rock explains, back in the day it was the DJs who were the life of the party, and all the rapper really had to do was occasionally yell things out to the crowd. I’m not certain I believe Chris’ real father actually had an irrational fear of rabbits, but it provided a nice B story about how willing Julius is to be there for his kids, even whether it means passing out at a magic show.

Other than the whole “being black” thing, I tend to empathize with

Chris, having grown up in a family where money was often tight, and of course dealing with all the usual trials of being an adolescent. Okay, perhaps that’s not the most accurate comparison.

It was nice to see Todd Bridges manufacture an appearance again in that episode. During that episode, however, I was more tuned to his friend Greg, who didn’t really understand all that DJ and hip-hop talk. The ending of the episode was predictable (of course the record Chris buys is going to skip, that’s part of his Charlie Brown-like karma), but whatever, it was still a great episode.

Well, I have the CW again, so it’s all good. I loved it when Chris wanted an advance for “Payback” and Monk immediately went for his gun, not realizing Chris meant the James Brown album, not actual “payback.”

Robert Wuhl additionally had a nice turn as the pawn shop owner who teaches Chris about supply and demand (read: pawn shops are a great way to get screwed out of your money). Hopefully it won’t be removed from my cable again.

My love for that show may have just increased ten fold.
