Everybody Hates Chris: Everybody Hates the Substitute

I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t have kicked his ass out the minute he said “hold on” when someone asked to use their own phone. Now, she’s just another idiot.

That’s really my only beef with that episode, which was otherwise pretty solid. It was never my best subject; even today I have no concept how many gallons are in a mile.

Chris Rock sums the episode up nicely in the end when he says that that new teacher was the first one who expected him to be more than he was, not less.

Best scene: The Officer and a Gentleman scene where Chris gets sprayed with a hose while holding up two books.

Now, whether that’s merely a choice on the part of the writers to have Ms. Omar has balls of steel. Omar, who kept asking to use their phone and tying up the line.

The subplot with Tawnya getting Drew in trouble was okay, but I was really struck by how patient Julius was with Mr. Morello completely oblivious to her own actions as a means of comic relief, that’s their

prerogative, but what I loved about her character from the early episodes is how she demonstrated that not all racism is blatant: sometimes you can have what seems like the best of intentions and still be completely wrong in your approach. I’m fairly positive I wouldn’t want to upset someone as big as Terry Crews. Either Julius is just incredibly malleable, or Mr. Morello seemed to be switching from a dimwitted woman misinformed about black culture to your basic run-of-the-mill racist, and in that episode she wasn’t much better, returning to a trip from Africa with a tiny bone for Chris he could put in his nose.

(S02E12) In this review I mentioned that the character of Ms. I loved Orlando Jones as a teacher who takes it upon himself to push Chris to not just settle for a B- in math. Hell, I would have been thrilled to get a B- in math. That’s not an exact quote, but it’s been a whole two minutes since the episode ended, and my memory isn’t what it used to be.
