Pilot Scoop: Blue Bloods

I’m totally changing gears here with the Fall TV pilots , and switching from my assessment of Hellcats to something heavier: CBS’s new drama, Blue Bloods . What it’s about : The Reagans have served the NYPD for multiple generations: grandfather Henry (Len Cariou) was the chief of police, his son Frank (Tom Selleck) is currently in the job, and Frank’s children Danny (Donnie Wahlberg) and Erin (Bridget Moynahan) also maintain law and order (as a detective and an assistant D.A., respectively). Now, the youngest of the household, Jamie (Will Estes), is being welcomed into the fold, having just graduated from the police academy. The family members butt heads, but ultimately try to help each other out when it comes to solving a hard-to-crack case. Where it works : The show has the same writing team as The Sopranos , so what more do you need? I don’t care much about the actual episode-to-episode police cases - that’s why you have every other procedural drama on television - but the family relationships here really hit a nice chord. The pilot sets up who each Reagan is (without giving away too much), and a surprise twist with a police conspiracy should keep viewers invested beyond just the first few weeks. Where it doesn’t : A couple of the characters feel clichéd, specifically Danny, who is the hot-tempered cop that’s not afraid to take drastic measures for justice. He has a sweeter, family-man side to help round him out, but I still feel like we’ve seen this over-the-top type before. Am I hooked? Definitely. I enjoy seeing the family interact (not to mention, Estes is nice to look at), and the pilot sets up enough suspense that I’m already dying to see the second episode. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World Soundtrack: What to Rock Out With

This week’s exciting, badass movie release Scott Pilgrim vs. the World brings with it an exciting, badass soundtrack . In the film, Michael Cera plays the title character and bassist in the band Sex Bob-Omb, and even though that band is fictional, their songs are not. They’re courtesy of Beck, who infuses original tracks like ” We Are Sex Bob-Omb ” and ” Summertime ” with real rock-star cred. The soundtrack features more of that from other artists too, like Frank Black’s tribute to the movie’s leading lady, ” I Heard Ramona Sing .” Perhaps the most download-worthy song on the soundtrack is one that’s featured prominently in the movie: ” Black Sheep .” It’s the gorgeous, addictive contribution from Metric (performed by another fictional band in the flick). The standout tracks continue: there’s a particularly awesome cover of Sade’s ” By Your Side ” by Beachwood Sparks, and the sexy ” Sleazy Bed Track ” by The Bluetones. The movie also makes use of previously existing songs that fit the tone, like the dreamy, several-years-old ” Anthems for a Seventeen-Year-Old Girl ” by Broken Social Scene and the decades-old - and achingly appropriate - ” Teenage Dream ” by T. Dad featured on ‘Extreme Makeover: Home Edition’ arrested

Greg Akers, who along with his children and wife were featured on “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” in 2008, was arrested Aug. 3 after violating a court protection order. On Aug. 2, Greg appeared at a residence in the 7800 block of Manor Drive, the same home that was featured on the hit TV show. Ginger Akers, Greg’s wife, filed the complaint against her husband for the violation, said Police Captain Joel Herzog. Clerk of Courts records show Ginger Akers filed for a protection order for domestic violence against her husband April 14 after filing for divorce on March 5. Fantasia Barrino Suicide Attempt Confirmed, Fantasia Overdosed

Fantasia Barrino’s suicide attempt has been confirmed, according to a report that the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department filed, saying that officers responded to a suicide attempt call at 8:43 p.m., WBTV.com reports. According to sources, Fantasia was found in a closet of her Glynmoor Lakes home; she was rushed to the Mercy South Hospital at Carolinas Medical Center in Pineville. ‘Lost’ alums Emerson, O’Quinn pursuing TV project

Michael Emerson confirms he and former fellow “Lost” star Terry O’Quinn are shopping around for ideas for a TV show. Emerson says they both want something more lighthearted than “Lost.” He hopes the show can acknowledge their “age and frailty.” Emerson says he envisions a show where, if their characters get hit in the face, they “don’t get up for a month.” The 55-year-old Emerson and 58-year-old O’Quinn are both up for best supporting actor Emmy Awards. Emerson says he is aware a segment from the “Lost” final season DVD was leaked recently. Even though he stars in it, however, Emerson says he still hasn’t seen it. Have we seen the last of ‘Last Comic Standing’?

The ‘Last Comic Standing’ final five: Roy Wood Jr., Mike DeStefano, Tommy Johnagin, Myq Kaplan and Felipe Esparza (to the right of host Craig Robinson). (NBC) Last Comic Standing announced its seventh winner on Monday night. Question is, will that be the last Last Comic Standing ? Unfortunately, according to Media Life magazine, NBC’s comedy competition received its lowest rating for a season finale in its history. Not good, considering it was up against the series premiere of ABC’s patchwork reality show Bachelor Pad and reruns ( LCS also finished behind a repeat of Big Bang Theory over on CBS). And considering it took last summer off — officially, LCS was actually canceled, then brought back to life for 2010 — this might not bode well. SPOILER ALERTS AFTER THE JUMP. The competition came down to Myq Kaplan, Mike DeStefano, Roy Wood Jr., Tommy Johnagin and the winner, Felipe Esparza. Esparza pulled in $250,000 and a development deal with NBC. First off, for those who hadn’t watched the show and aren’t familiar with Felipe — and I can’t help but call him that — he’s one of these naturally funny guys who would show up on stage with a tie over a polo shirt. Pretty sure the tie’s a clip-on. Just a shambling mass o’ comedy. ‘LCS’ champ Felipe Esparza hugs ‘08 winner Ilisa Shlesinger. (NBC) Personally, I know Felipe from someone else’s jokes — he’s the best friend of Gabriel Iglesias, and the main character in a lot of Iglesias’ best material. Check out this link for a classic bit featuring Felipe. The thing about Felipe — at least to me — is I don’t think he can carry a full 60-minute special. Again, it’s not that this guy isn’t funny — he can get me going — but after a while, the whole persona and scattershot jokes wear on me. Personally, I would’ve liked to have seen either DeStefano (who finished fourth) or Kaplan (fifth) much higher. During the series, DeStefano had a very honest style — he was more than willing to dive into material about being a drug addict and going through recovery — and was a steady presence on stage. Kaplan, meanwhile, had a bizarre sense of humor that wasn’t for everyone, but when he was “on”, he could get the whole place going. The two-hour finale had a huge share of filler material — some of it was winning, like Kathy Griffin’s mini-set, but most wasn’t worth seeing, including the sets of judges Andy Kindler, Natasha Leggero and Greg Giraldo, skits by host Craig Robinson, and the 5-minute set by 2008 defending champ Ilisa Shlesinger. As SheckyMagazine.com ‘s Brian McKim and Traci Skene (both of whom auditioned for the show) wrote: “Instead of handing over a bronzed rubber chicken to Kurt Metzger (for having ‘the best material outside the top 10′), how about letting Metzger do a tight five instead?” Of the five finalists, I think Johnagin and Wood will continue workmanlike careers with maybe a foray onto Comedy Central; DeStefano may be able to parlay this into some smaller film roles; Kaplan may be looking at a big writing career, and Felipe… well, he I could see doing a sitcom. All they’d have to do is turn both his and Iglesias’ bits into 22 minutes of gold. That I’d watch. Otherwise, he might be relegated to the back pages of history, like several other winners — Dat Phan, Jon Reep, even Shlesinger hasn’t quite set the world on fire just yet. Well, this is quite the departure from the sugary “California Gurls” or “Teenage Dream” (watch that happy music video here ): Katy Perry has released her latest, “Circle the Drain,” which is basically a fiery tell-off to a boyfriend caught up in drugs and alcohol (the rumor mill says that the track is about Perry’s ex Travie McCoy). I’m actually digging this aggressive side to Perry, but have a listen and tell me what you think of her new attitude when you read more.
